Artist's Comments

It's true! References are the latest craze within the art society! Tired of feeling guilty because you traced a picture or just simply can't draw something correctly? Then a reference is the thing for you. References are guaranteed help you improve on your skills, get one today!

Ok seriously, references DO help you improve. One time I was in my school library looking at a leopard book. I decided to use the pictures as reference to draw it's head in my style. And guess what? I can draw animal heads better now! *gasp!*. Oh and to me, tracing does not help and it's considered cheating since you're not really learning anything.

EDIT: Made text more readable.

Tracing is lame! :D You should also add that eyeballing is just as bad since it just replicates a picture that isn't yours.

Also, I think that the text would be easier to read if you made it white or black.

"Thats so STRAIGHT!"

Lol I'm still a big referencer but not quite as bad as when I first started to draw. Now I reference a pose and change practically everything about it but when I first started I pretty much just copied what I looked at. But you are right, it really does help you improve, and that is part of the reason why I'm where I am today!

using references is not only better than tracing, it may even be neccessary.

You're right! :)

I beg to differ. 'Referencing' should remain in an art school classroom, where you are being taught to draw better with examples and step by step instruction.

Referencing off someone else's artwork is more or less mild art theft.

If someone isn't creative enough to come up with their own poses or ideas, then they aren't real artists.
